Charity Focus, Giving Back: Raptor House Rehabilitation Center, Yakima Suzanne Young, Tasting Room Manager Kestrel Vintners has a special relationship with raptors, especially the small and colorful Kestrel bird, the namesake of the winery. Kestrels keep the vineyard free from unwanted pests who tend to munch on vineyard grapes and cause havoc among the fields. Since the winery's inception, Kestrel has supported the Raptor Rehabilitation House in Selah, Washington which is expertly run by Marsha Flamm. The Kestrel Festival, held every year in early summer, enables Flamm to demonstrate the beauty of these special hawks and talk about how they rehabilitate these birds of prey. Nearly half of the ones that arrive injured are rehabilitated and released into the wild. Some don't survive. Some imprinted birds are successfully reintroduced into the wild in a slow, deliberate process that raptor experts call "hacking." Some are simply too imprinted on humans to make it and - like the more significantly injured raptors - become lifetime residents of the rehab center, to be used in educational displays such as the Kestrel Festival. During the Kestrel festival last month as in previous years, Kestrel introduced special "Raptor House" branded wines and donated a portion of every sale to the Raptor House. Find out how you can support this worthwhile cause at www.raptorhouse.org. |

From Vine to Wine Flint Nelson, Winemaker, Kestrel VIntners Yesterday Dirk, Juan and I were in the vineyard counting clusters. We do this to extrapolate our potential yields. Things are light this year due to rain during bloom. Fruit set is poor when the weather is cold and wet. That's not all bad though, light crops mean high quality wine, that makes me happy! We have also had our hands full with construction and building projects. Kestrel is adding nine new tanks to our existing building, and a barrel and cased goods house directly behind the winery. It is an exciting time with many options to consider, and our Club Members and Tasting Room visitors will be delighted with our offerings for the coming season. |
